Young chess champion no pawn

WHEN GARY McNamara began playing chess with his brother on their Commodore 64 as a boy, he had no idea how much the game would become a part of his life.

The Hinchinbrook resident, 24, has just won the City of Sydney Chess Championships, held in Burwood.

And now he has big plans to make it to the top of the sport.

“This is my first tournament win in the adult chess world, so it feels pretty good,” he said.

With five wins and two draws during the competition, he played one game a week for seven weeks – making it his longest competition to date.

“It was very tiring and takes a lot of out of you,” he said.

Competing since he was 12, McNamara often visited the giant chess set at Macquarie Mall in Liverpool to play and observe other players.
