MANILA, Philippines — National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. is confident that Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So will again qualify for the prestigious Chess World Cup.

The 16-year-old So had just defeated International Master (IM) Nguyen Than Son of Vietnam in his opening match on Wednesday in the 2010 Asian Individual Chess Championships, which is a qualifier for the Chess World Cup.

“No doubt, makukuha ni Wesley ang isa sa limang slots para sa World Chess Cup (Wesley will get 1 of the 5 slots for the Chess World Cup),” said Pichay.

So had a successful run in the 2009 Chess World Cup, reaching the 4th round of the competition by defeating several chess heavyweights including Gata Kamsky of the US and Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine.

Pichay added that he expects other Filipino players in the ongoing Asian Individual Chess Championships in Subic to do well.

“Kumpiyansa din ako magiging maganda din ang laro ng iba pang Pinoy players (I’m confident that other Filipino players will give good performances),” said Pichay.
