Chess team off to Russia

KATHMANDU: An eight-member team of Nepali chess players left for Russia on Saturday to take part in the 39th chess Olympiad. Five players and three officials are in the team.
Rajesh Hari Joshi, chairman, and Nabin Tandukar, vice chairman, of Nepal Chess Association and Ram Kumar Thapa of The Himalayan Chess Club along with players Badri Lal Nepali, Bilamlal Shrestha, Prachanda Malakar, Keshav Shrestha and Uttam Raj Shrestha left for Russia to take part in the competition to be held from September 24 to October 4.
Officials Joshi, Tandukar and Thapa will participate in the Chess FIDE Congress. Players of 160 countries will take part in the competition. The winner of the tournament will be awarded with the FIDE award as per their ranking.
Manish Hamal is the only chess player in Nepal to bag the FIDE award.
