Dubai, Apr 11 (PTI) World’s second youngest Grandever Parimarjan Negi outwitted Armenian GrandHrant Melkumyan to take the joint lead in the Dubai International Open chess tournament here.

Playing the black side of a side variation of the Slav defense, Parimarjan was ready for a draw in the middle game when he sacrificed a pawn but the Armenian failed to notice the hidden tactics behind the grand manoeuvre.

As the game progressed, Parimarjan seized the initiative and the back rank weakness of white had a telling effect.

It turned out to be a drama on the fourth board involving former world junior girls’ champion D Harika. Playing with black against Eduardo Itturizaga of Venezuela, the Indian was happy to take a draw when her opponent proposed it after a mere 11 moves.
