CHENNAI: Parimarjan Negi started as India’s best hope in the World junior chess championship in Chotowa (Poland), but it was 16-year-old Orissa girl Padmini Rout who bagged a medal for India. Rout won a bronze medal in the girls section on Monday after her last-round draw with Cori Tello Estela of Peru.

Anna Muzychuk of Slovenia easily won the gold when she beat Ekaterini Pavlidou of Greece in the last round to tally 11 points from 13 games.

Muzychuk’s task was made easier after Olga Girya of Russia, who went into the last round with 10 points and shared lead with the Slovenian, was forced to split the point by compatriot Irina Adrenko.

Rout split the point with Cori Estela in 41 moves of Kings Indian Defence. Padmini, who started her campaign as the No. 11 seed, did well to finish with a medal, especially when India’s expectations were in the boys section and on Negi. Girya won the silver with 10.5 points. Padmini and Girya came to the fore in the last round when only when Muzychuk lost her penultimate round game to Cori Tella Estela.
