Yerevan – The Fifth Republican Interschool Chess Olympiad is currently underway, organized by the Republic of Armenia’s Ministry of Education and Science and the Armenia Chess Federation.

AGBU is assisting for the fourth consecutive year. The annual event brings together young students from all regions of Armenia and Karabakh to compete.

The tournament began in the fall of 2010 and has been taking place at the Armenian Chess Academy. The first and second rounds were held from October 15 – November 10, and November 15 – December 15, respectively.

The third round begins this month, March 2011, and the finals are slated to take place in May. The main goal of the tournament is to support the development of chess in Armenia, increase the popularity of the game and its role in society, and aid in discovering new talent to help maintain Armenia’s leading position in the world of chess.

AGBU has already donated more than 4,000 chess sets and chess clocks to schools in Armenia and Karabakh, creating a solid base for the development and growth of the game. Thanks to the financial assistance by AGBU this year, the participants of the tournament will receive additional chess sets, chess clocks, and magnetic chess boards. The winners of the final will receive laptops made available by AGBU.

Established in 1906, AGBU (www.agbu.org) is the world’s largest non-profit Armenian organization. Headquartered in New York City, AGBU preserves and promotes the Armenian identity and heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian program, annually touching the lives of some 400,000 Armenians around the world.
