Nashville youth city chess champs crowned

Meigs Magnet School eighth-grader Manu Nair, Father Ryan’s Hudson Todd and Christopher Cheney of Rutherford Tutorial Academy tied for top honors in the high school division of the Nashville Scholastic Chess Championships.

James Wu, a seventh-grader at J.T. Moore Middle, was unbeaten in dominating the other junior high competitiors for first place in the grade 9-and-under section.

Harding Academy sixth-grader Sal Neglia was undefeated in winning the elementary title for grades 6 and under for the third straight year.

Home-schooler Brian Wright of Clarksville, Tenn., successfully defended his title in the primary section (grades 3 and below).

Meigs’ Nair was playing up in a higher division after winning the junior high section last year.

The six city champions were among 23 of the Midstate’s most talented young players who played their way into Saturday’s tournament at the Nashville Chess Center, 2911 Belmont Boulevard.
