The 22nd Open International Tournament of Kavala was held on 6-13th August at the Foyer of Kavala Prefecture Amphitheatre in Kavala, Greece.

Israeli Champion Tamir Nabaty took the winner’s trophy despite the last round defeat at the hands of GM Alexandr Kharitonov. Six players who won their final games on the top tables caught up with Nabaty, but the Israeli sported the best tie-break score.

There were three playing groups in Kavala: Open A (for players rated over 1900), Open B (U2000 elo) and Open C (U1050 elo and U13 years of age). All groups were played over nine rounds of Swiss system.

Open A had 75 participants from 15 countries, including 12 Grandmasters.

Open B had 106 players. Athanasios Emmanouilidis (GRE 1828) was the clear winner with 7,5 points. All standings below.

The tournament was organized by the Kavala Chess Club and East Macedonia & Thrace Chess Union. The total prize fund was 8500 EUR. Top prizes were EUR 2000, 1200, 750, 500, 400 etc.
