Rwabushenyi Memorial 2012 winners Phiona Mutesi and Harold Wanyama have opened up with wins in the opening round of the annual Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Tournament going on at the Katonga Hall, Hotel Africana in Kampala.
Playing on board 2, Mutesi rated 1676 in the world used just 25 moves of the more than expected 60 to tame Victoria Nakirandde in some of the quickest games of the ladies category.
“My opponent succumbed to my hard pressing as she easily gave me a free Queen and had no option but to give up the game”, a soft spoken Mutesi told Kawowo Sports as she relaxed outside the playing hall.
Ladies top favourite, Ivy Amoko playing on board 1 easily won her opening round one game against Joan Nakimuli, while Christine Namaganda beat Grace Kigeni in the longest ladies game of the opening round.
Elsewhere, lady luck smiled on Sharon Twongyeirwe as she got a point bye to the next round of action while Goretti Angolikin overcame Shanita Namaganda
On his part, FIDE Master Harold Wanyama, with a global rating of 2219 overcame a hard fighting Givan Amuge to record an opening round one victory.
“After the hard opening game, my opponent got stronger and stronger. Perhaps, I benefited from his wrong knight move as I captured a pawn that put him in checkmate, and it was game done”, a then smiling Wanyama said.
In some of the other games played, International Master Elijah Emojong rated 2339 playing on the much fancied board one overcame the Uganda Chess Federation president (1887) with a gruelling end game situation.
Former National Junior Champion, Farouk Fauza (2001) over came Mubiru Kizito to attain his maiden point.
Eight rounds will be played over the 4 day’s action in which lots of cash prizes are at stake for the different category winners.
