Ugandan prodigy Mutesi is on team for World Chess Olympiad

KAMPALA (Xinhua) — Ugandan prodigy chess player Phiona Mutesi has qualified to be part of the team that will take part in the 2014 World Olympiad in Norway.

Vianney Lugga, the President Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) told Xinhua on Monday that the young promising Mutesi will be part of the team.

“She showed good form in the qualifiers that we had and made the team,” explained Luggya.

Mutesi who grew up in the slums of Katwe played for Uganda at the 39th Chess Olympiad, scoring 1.5 points from the seven games and went on earn the Woman Candidate Master (WCM) level in 2012.

Mutesi told Xinhua on phone that she is very glad that she will be at the Olympiad again since it’s the World Cup of chess.

Woman Candidate Master (WCM), Ivy Amoko rated 1753 by the international chess body (FIDE) in the entire world will also be part of Uganda’s team together Grace Kigeni, Christine Namaganda and Goretti Angolikin.

The Uganda Chess Federation President said they expect the men and women’s team to put up a good performance at the Olympiad to take place in August.

“The team started training over a month ago and will continue to prepare till the time of the event,” added Luggya.

Fide Master (FM), Harold Wanyama, Candidate Master (CM), Patrick Kawuma, Mathias Arthur Ssegwanyi and Elijah Emojong will make the men’s team.
