TWELVE-year-old, multi-talented Patricia Kelly, who has been playing chess since she was six years old, has won the Rising Stars Chess Tournament held recently in Inverness.

She explained: “You play six matches with different partners and whoever won the most games was the champion.”

Patricia’s father Martin who runs the Kemnay Chess Club and manages the North East Junior Chess Association (NEJCA) web site said: “It was a very good achievement and a good mix of junior schools covering a large geographical area from Stonehaven to Inverness.

“It is a graded competition recognised by the main chess body in Scotland. Patricia has recently started beating me – she has reached my level now. My other daughter, Roisin was also well placed in the junior competition.”

Patricia is an accomplished mathematician who has won trophies at school events and in addition ranks fifth in the world in Premier level Highland dancing.

Dad Martin said: “She has been fourth in Europe and is also currently English champion.”
