Russian Grandmaster Alexander Motylev convincingly won the 2014 European Chess Championship in the competition of 257 players from 27 countries, including 128 Grandmasters.

In the final round Motylev split the point with David Navara to finish on 9,0/11 points, leaving the nearest followers a full point behind.

In a quick interview with News.am Motylev said that he “didn’t even think about the title and that his victory was a real miracle”.

“The joy of the victory I will first share with my family. My son always asks why I’m playing badly. Now I’ll show him the medal and he will understand that his father is not that bad after all!”, Motylev added.

The 2014 European Individual Chess Championship – Tigran Petrosian Memorial was organized by the Armenian Chess Federation and it was held on 2-15th March at the Yerevan Business Centre.

The European Individual Championship 2014 was a qualification event for the next World Chess Cup. According to FIDE regulations top 23 players qualified.
