THe solution seems to me to be a mere excercise….and something we can probably figure out…but what I’m trying to figure out is..what the heck opening was this born out of? It Optically looks like an evans gambit..but it isn’t. Any ideas anyone?
OK, here’s my best effort:
r1qr2k1/bpp2ppp/5nn1/1P2p3/2B1P3/B1P1N3/2Q2PPP/R2R3K w – – 0 1
1.Rxd8+ Qxd8
2.Bxf7+ Kxf7
3.Qa2+ Ke8
4.Rd1 Qc8
5.Nf5 Nh5
6.Qg8+ Nf8
7.Qxf8#
However, black does not need to accept the B sac: I don’t see anything after
1.Rxd8+ Qxd8
2.Bxf7+ Kh8
3.Rd1 Qc8
So, unfortunately, I don’t get it. I find it easier to believe that I’m a patzer who doesn’t see anything than that this brilliancy refers to winning a pawn.
Here I immediately like Bxf7+, but I don’t like Kxf7 Qb3+ Qe6!, so therefore I try:
1. Rxd8+ Qxd8
2. Bxf7+ Kxf6 (2. … Kh8 3. Bxg6 hxb6 looks nasty but may be critical here?)
3. Qb3+ Ke8 (only move)
4. Nf5!
Threats Nxg7#
4. … Qc8
5. Rd1 Nh5
6. g4
1 – 0
Amusing puzzle!
1. Rxd8+ Qxd8
2. Bxf7+ Kxf7
3. Qb3+ Ke8
4. Qe6+ Ne7
5. Nf5(Threatening Nxg7 and Nxe7)
cute puzzle
It´s an “Inverted Hanham”, isn´t it?
Bxf7+! if Kxf7
Rxd8 then Qb3+
Interesting line to discuss:
1. Rxd8+ Qxd8
2. Bxf7+ Kh8 (seems critical to me as it does to James I. Hymas)
3. Rd1! Qc8 (what else)
4. Bxg6 hxg6 (ugly king position)
5. Be7
Threats Rd8. Seems to gain quen for rook and bishop.
Any opinion on this, anyone?
I guess the situation after 2. … Kh8 may have other ideas as well?
@pht
After
1. Rxd8+ Qxd8
2. Bxf7+ Kh8
3. Rd1! Qc8
4. Bxg6 hxg6
5. Be7
then
5 … Qe8 seems to hold things together (as well as they can be!)
The d7 and d8 entry squares are covered. Black would just love White to play B:f6 and sort out his K-side pawn, and the pawn on b5 is getting hit.
Clearly, black stands worse and clearly 2. B:f7+ was a fine move, winning a pawn; but unless we’ve missed something, it’s a bit of a let-down to see that all the fireworks happen only in the notes!
