About 120 people took part in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” Chess Tournament Monday at Ponderosa Junior High School.

Dozens of chessboards filled the school hallways and cafeterias, as children as young as 5 played side-by-side with chess veterans age 70 and above.

Audrey Poudrier, one of the event’s coordinators, asked the players to remember King’s lessons of kindness and discipline.

“What better way to honor Dr. King than by playing chess,” Poudrier said, “(a game where players are judged) not by the strength of their body, but by the strength of their mind?”
