EDGEFIELD — Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club will host a U.S. Chess Federation-rated tournament, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Merriwether Middle School.
The scholastic (K-12) tournament will feature three sections: elementary, middle and high school. Individual trophies for first, second and third place will be awarded in each section, and the first-place team in each category will also receive a trophy.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the first round will begin at 9 a.m. The five-round Swiss tournament is open to all K-12 students who want to participate. The school is at 430 Murrah Road, North Augusta.
This new tournament is the cumulative effort of local educators, parent volunteers and the leadership of the South Carolina Chess Association, and is thought to be the first U.S. Chess Federation-rated tournament in Edgefield County. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, S.C. Chess Association president David Grimaud will be attending.

How did it go?
Hi, We had a moderate turnout (11 players) but what a hearty bunch! Besides the 2008 Polgar Representative from SC, we had a youngster who finished 10th at the 2008 National Scholastic Championships in Fla. The Georgia Elementary Champ was on hand as well. Some kids rode two hours to be there! All seemed to enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to play. I’ve never been as proud of a group of kids and wish I could’ve given them all trophies. David Grimaud and his family, as well as Mike Games are to be commended for their leadership and “sweat equity”.
