Magnus Carlsen is the most talked about player since the retirement of Garry Kasparov. His exploits on the 64 squares have created interest even among non-chess players.

Having achieved the highest-ever Elo rating, Carlsen has the potential to cross 2900 in the future. However, despite his phenomenal achievements, he looked a little wary in his brief interaction with the media on Thursday ahead of his World Championship match against Viswanathan Anand.

Carlsen, who relies more on his on board skills, and consistently outplays even strong Grandmasters from equal positions, was unwilling to throw light on his team of seconds, saying: “I appreciate Anand’s openness. I am not going to return the favour.” Seconds play an important role in determining who the champion becomes. Having a good team of seconds was one of the reasons for Anand’s long reign as world champion.

Playing in his first World Championship, Carlsen probably feels any little piece of information might prove beneficial for his adversary. The only known second of Carlsen is his compatriot Jon Ludvig Hammer, who is Norway’s No 2 player.

Carlsen, who has been staying in a resort from the time he arrived here, was happy with the response for the game in the city.“With Anand being a big star, interest for the game is huge in Chennai. I will be happy if the match has a positive impact on the city,” said Carlsen. He, however, differed from Anand on staying at the same venue where the championship is taking place. “It can be a little tough to be at the same place for a long time.”

Carlsen, who loves to grind his opponents with subtle moves, will have the advantage of white pieces in the first game against Anand. After the first battle one will get a glimpse of what is in store.
