The Western Class Championships attracted 198 players to Agoura Hills over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. That’s the best turnout for the state’s richest tournament since 2004.

International Masters Andranik Matikozyan and Enrico Sevillano shared first place in the Master section with scores of 5 1/2 -1 1/2 . Matikozyan, a former state champion, defeated Sevillano in the fourth round but yielded three draws. Sevillano caught up with a last-round victory over Alexandre Kretchetov in a battle of current state co-champions.

Third place at 5-2 went to another state champion, grandmaster Melikset Khachiyan, who drew both winners. Kretchetov, Eric Hansen (Canada), Andy Lee, Garush Manukyan and Eugene Yanayt were next at 4-3.

Other sections were won by Michael Yee, 6-1 in the Expert section; Evgeny Shver, 6-1 in Class A; Michael Ambartsoumian, 6 1/2 – 1/2 in Class B; Marcos Ferrer, 6 1/2 – 1/2 in Class C; Minas Badikyan, 6-1 in Class D; Leo Kamgar, 6-1 in Class E; and Jayson Tan-Say, 5 1/2 -1 1/2 in Under-1000. In addition, Marek Jankowski (7-0 in Class E) and Conrado Castellano (5 1/2 -1 1/2 in Under-1000) earned unrated prizes.
