MERRIWETHER – Senator Shane Massey opened the 2nd Annual Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Tournament which was held Saturday, April 10, by making the first move for Alex Thibodeau at Board 1. Alex’s father, Billy, was one of several parents who praised the senator for his participation. “It is really nice of Senator Massey to take time out of his weekend to do this for the kids”, he said. Merriwether Maverick’s coach, David Whatley, agreed adding, “he helped to make the event extra special for those in attendance”.

With the first move behind them, students from the Merriwether area clashed with students from Abbeville, Greenwood, and Atlanta in the four-round main event that featured plenty of sharp tactical games. Excellent sportsmanship was also plentiful throughout the day. Whatley, who served as an assistant tournament director on two occasions actually overheard competitors helping their opponent. “One of the distinctions enjoyed by chess is that it is a game of honor. Many players have an acute sense of fair play, and I’ve been fortunate enough to witness that many times”, he said.

After tabulating the games, the trophy winners were called to the stage by Chief Tournament Director Mike Games, and Assistant Director, John Beckett for presentations. Assistant Director, David Whatley handed out the awards.

Isaac Miller and Andrew Miller, both of Greenwood battled fiercely in the non-rated section. Both players will receive premium U.S. Chess Federation memberships for their efforts.
