The International chess tournament Baku Open 2009, devoted to the Independence Day of the Azerbaijan Republic, is taking place from 20th to 30th September 2009 under the patronage of the Azerbaijan Youth & Sport Ministry and the Chess Federation of Azerbaijan. A rich prize fund of USD 60.000$ is allocated for the prizes, with 10.000$ reserved for the winner.

The field is spearheaded by world’s top players Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan 2721) and Gata Kamsky (USA 2692). Besides a number of strong local players and a large expedition from Georgia, there are also guests from Israel, Ilia Smirin and Victor Mikhalevski, and Russia – Boris Savchenko. In addition, neighboring Turkey and Iran will have their representatives.
