Kings’ chess postponed
NEW DELHI, June 15, 2012

Financial crisis and the unstable political situation in Romania have forced the organisers of the Kings’ chess tournament, featuring five-time World champion Viswanathan Anand, to postpone the premier event.

The event, with Anand, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Teimour Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Sergey Karjakin (Russia), Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) and Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu (Romania) in the fray, was scheduled to be held from June 23 to July 4 at Medias.

According to the statement from the event’s Press Chief Dorian Rogozenco, “The organisers will do everything they can in order to hold the tournament later this year. The reason for not holding the tournament now is the financial crisis and very unstable political situation in Romania.”

The Kings tournament is the second Grand Slam tournament to run into trouble. Last year, the event in Linares was cancelled and even this year, there is no sign of any revival of the elite tournament.

Two other Grand Slam events — Pearl Spring tournament in Nanjing (China) and the M-Tel Masters in Sofia (Bulgaria) — have also been taken off the calendar for the time being.
