Carlsen drew Anand in the final round. This gave Aronian a chance to catch Carlsen if he can beat Caruana with black. He lost. Therefore, Carlsen wins the Zurich classical portion by a full point (or 2 points based on the scoring system of the organizer).
Final round results:
Fabiano Caruana 1-0 Levon Aronian
Hikaru Nakamura ½ Boris Gelfand
Viswanathan ½ Magnus Carlsen
Final standings (Classical)
1. Carlsen, Magnus 2872 4 (8 pts)
2. Aronian, Levon 2812 3 (6)
3. Caruana, Fabiano 2782 2½ (5)
4. Anand, Viswanathan 2773 2 (4)

Hikaru just had a bad 2 days. He could have won it.
“…Hikaru just had a bad 2 days. He could have won it….”
Yes, and if he had wings, he could fly.
Face it, right now, in any competition, it’s just Carlsen and Aronian fighting for top honors.
Who is this clown that posts Nakamura non-sense??

If Magnus was scared of Hikaru coming into this event, just think how terrified he must be now…
At their best both Aronian and Kramnik are better than Carlsen, but Carlsen is super consistent. The only way to decide a World Championships is having a long match – say at least 24 rounds.
Hikaru should do the same as Fischer: avoid short tournaments. 🙂
Nakamura won in both formats. Congratulations Nakamura. Others lost. Sorry, next time they can try for 2nd place as Nakamura will always be first. Period.
