Livigno Chess Open 2010

The 1st International Livigno Chess Open started on Friday at the Polifunzionale Plaza Placheda with the introductory games of the Open A tournament. 44 players compete in Open A, while the other two groups are launching Saturday. The competitions end on 18th September.
Six Grandmasters participate in the Open A, but already in the first round some of them faced fierce resistance from the lower rated opposition. Arkadij Rotstein, Vladimir Petkov and Miroljub Lazic were held to draws by Fide Masters Rok Hrzica, Angelo Damia and Martin Skliba, respectively.
After two rounds, Grandmasters Emilio Cordova (Peru) and Igor Naumkin (Russia), International Master Fred Berend (Luxembourg) and FM Ehud Shachar (Israel) are leading with two points each. Another 28 players participate in Open B and C.
Third round is taking place on Sunday, at 9:30 CET, follow all the games live on the official website.
Livigno, located between Engadine and Upper Valtellina, is an enchanting valley that stretches for 12 kilometers, between two mountain chains that drop from 3,000 to 1,800 meters.The village is a long line of houses built from wood and stone. With more than 100 comfortable hotels, Livigno is one of the Alps’ most important and well equipped tourist resorts.
The other parish is Trepalle, the highest permanently inhabited dwelling in Europe, at 1,900 to 2,250 meters above the sea level.
