Magnus Carlsen participated in a live chess pieces game in front of the parliament in Løvebakken on Tuesday morning. World number one played against Labour politician Kåre Simonsen, and the pieces were second graders from the Battle School.

The game was part of the promotion of the Chess Olympiad 2014 in Tromso. The Norwegian Government gave a 70 million NOK guarantee to the event, which is supposed to attract some 3000 visitors, including 1400 chess players. The Chess Olympiad is the second largest sports event in the world measured in the number of participating countries. Tromsø has to compete with the Varna Region in Bulgaria in the bid for the event. The decision on which city will get the Chess Olympiad 2014 will be taken during the Chess Olympiad 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk.

Olympics has never been held in Norway, and not in the Nordic countries since Stockholm in 1937 and Helsinki in 1952.

“It will be a hard fight. This is great politics. We have no guarantee of how it goes, but we’ve done a good job and was there early, “says Danielsen. Additionally Tromso will fight to acquire the World Cup in 2013. “We should be early on the track to signal that we would have exactly this event and that we were going to fight really hard to get it. Magnus Carlsen has also paved the way with their fantastic achievement,” he said.

Norway confirmed that the high desire with which they are working for the last four years have scared the competitions, and countries that initially planned to attempt bid, like China, will not do it for the 2014 Chess Olympiad.
