VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem has regained his International Super Grandmaster (GM) title, the World Chess Federation (FIDE) announced on May
According to FIDE’s latest rankings, Liem has climbed three notches to his current 43rd position with an Elo rating of 2703.

Liem’s improvement was attributed to his outstanding achievements at the HD Bank Cup Open Chess Tournament in Ho Chi Minh City in March.

However, Vietnam’s second top seed Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son dropped from 87th to 100th position with a 2656 Elo.

As for women, Pham Le Thao Nguyen made a breakthrough in FIDE rankings when she moved up to the 69th place with an Elo rating of 2390 for the first time. Her teammate, Hoang Thi Bao Tram stood at the 108th position with an ELo rating of 2356.

At present, Vietnam’s chess team is sharpening their skills to compete at the coming Asian championships in HCM City from May 4-14.

The team’s five top seeds have taken berths to the 2012 World Chess Championships this month in Moscow, Russia.
