MANILA, Philippines – Grandmasters Wesley So and Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor became the highest-ranked Filipino chess players in the 4th Prospero Pichay International Open Chess tournament to finish tied at fourth place.
So and Villamayor drew with their last round foes to end up tied from fourth to sixth spots with GM Mikheil Mchedlishvili of Georgia.
So halved the point with GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore while Villamayor drew with Mchedlishvili to finish with 6.0 points.
Zhang’s last round result tied him with GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran from second to third as both players finished with 6.5 points.
They are one point behind eventual champion GM Li Chao of China.
GMs Mark Paragua, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales and IMs Oliver Dimakiling, Rolando Nolte and Julio Catalino Sadorra and NM Haridas Pascua finished tied for seventh to 21st places.
