Only few days left to see Lewis Chessmen exhibition

Anyone interested in seeing the sensational Lewis Chessmen exhibition currently on display at Aberdeen Art Gallery has until this Sunday [09 January 2011] to check it out.

The Lewis Chessmen: Unmasked is the most comprehensive exhibition on the chess pieces for over a decade, featuring chessmen drawn from the collections of National Museums Scotland and the British Museum.

The touring exhibition looks at the mystery and intrigue surrounding the chessmen and explores the stories surrounding their discovery, and shows how the characters reflected society at the time they were made. It draws upon new research by National Museums Scotland on their craftsmanship, origins and historical context which provide visitors with a new and exciting perspective.

There has been a huge response to the show – so far 19,677 people have seen the exhibition since it opened a few months ago [07 October 2010].

The touring exhibition will travel on to Shetland and then Stornoway so this week represents the last chance to see the exhibition on the mainland.

Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums manager Christine Rew said: “We have been delighted to work with the British Museum and National Museums of Scotland to bring the major exhibition, The Lewis Chessmen Unmasked, to Aberdeen.

“The exhibition gave visitors a rare opportunity to get close to these marvellous objects and to explore the mystery of their origin and discovery in the 19th century.

“There’s been a huge public response to these extraordinary and intriguing artefacts with visitors making special and repeat visits to see them.”
