Chess club still safe from geese

Laugh all you want at the chess club kids — at least they don’t have to worry about goose droppings while check-mating an opponent.

I was in the chess club.

Out on the streets of the big city, you never mentioned how much you love the classic four-step opener and the “en passant” move.
These days, it’s not so big a deal.

The other morning, I watched with great pride as my granddaughter, Kaylee, won her chess club tournament game and advanced to the championship match for fourth- graders at Westfield-Washington Elementary School.

And I was thinking about seeing that room full of kids — I volunteer on a weekly basis for these early morning gatherings — sitting quietly, moving their bishops, their rooks, their pawns.
