GMs Onischuk and Shulman are both one step closer to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. GM Kamsky tried very hard to defeat GM Shulman but with no luck. Therefore, Yury still maintains his full point lead going to the last round.
In group A, GM Akobian tried to do the same to GM Onischuk. The game got very interesting but Alex held on to secure his full point lead as well. Both have 6.5 points out of 8.
Hikaru won 5 straight games to pull within 1 point of Onischuk in group A. GM Ibragimov defeated IM Friedel to join Hikaru with 5.5 points. GM Stripunsky defeated IM Schneider. He also has 5.5 points.
GM Christiansen defeated IM Perelshteyn to join Kamsky at 5.5 points in group B. Both are 1 point behind GM Shulman.
On the women’s side, my two pre-tournament favorites came through. WGM Goletiani defeated FM/SM Bercys to win group A while IM Zatonskih defeated “Chimi” in group B. Anna now leads her group by a full point ahead of “Chimi” and Airapetian.
Everything will come down to the last round. If the leaders (Onischuk, Shulman and Zatonskih) can draw their last round’s games, they will win their groups and proceed to the “Rapid Championship Match”. Here are some of the key final round pairings: Onischuk (6.5) vs. Nakamura (5.5), Akobian (5.5) vs. Ibragimov (5.5), Stripunsky(5.5) vs. Goldin (5.0) in group A and Fishbein (5.0) vs. Shulman (6.5), Kamsky (5.5) vs. Shabalov (5.0), Yermolinsky (5.0) vs. Christiansen (5.5) in group B.
Exciting stuff!
