Lassies and Old Timers – Czech Coal Chess Match 2009 | 27.11.2009
Boris Spasskij will be in Marienbad

The tenth world champion Boris Spasskij will be the guest of honor of a chess match „Lasses and Old Timer” – Czech Coal Chess Match 2009, which will take place in Marianske Lazne at Cristal Palace Hotel from 28th November till 5th December 2009.

Chess legends (Viktor Korchnoi, Jan Timman, Robert Hübner a Vlastimil Hort) will compete with young grandmistresses (Humpy Koneru, Anna Muzychuk, Katerina Lahno a Jana Jackova) in the two-round scheveningen match. A non-playing captain of the Old Timers will be the FIDE’s ex-president, the grandmaster Fridrich Olafsson. Lasses will be led by a coach of the Czech men national team, the international master Michal Konopka.

Each game will be commentated for the audience by the grandmaster Marek Vokac. Apart from Spasskij and Vokac other grandmasters and international masters such as Fridrik Olafsson, Robert Fontaine, Michal Konopka or Mark Dvoreckij will be present.

The match is held by civic association Prague Chess Society, which on its website provides basic information about the match and its participants. Fresh information and photos will be added regularly and during the actual match all games will be streamed on-line.

Last year the Lassies versus Old Timers tournament was very even leveled , nevertheless it was won by the quartet of men (Anatolij Karpov, Vlastimil Hort, Fridrik Olafsson a Wolfgang Uhlmann). Out of the four Lasses ( Viktorije Cmilyte, Anna Ushenina, Jana Jackova a Katerina Nemcova) it was the Czech number one, Jan Jackova, who was perhaps the most successful. She managed to brought down in the first round of mini game the former world champion Anatolij Karpov. You can find games, photos and results of last year tournament here.

At the same time as the tournament of the legends and the promising young players, a training of the Czech juniors team will be held in Marianske Lazne. The team will be trained by one of the best chess coach Marek Dvorecky. Chessplayers interested in Dvorecky’s lessons might look at ChessCafe webpage, where this Russian coach posts every month one of his lessons in English for free.

Tickets will be for sale in front of the tournament venue. You can also book your tickets by e-mail prazska.sachova@gmail.com. One day entry is CZK 40 (children, students and pensioners.)
