I am finally back to NY after a wonderful weekend at the Susan Polgar World Open Championship for Girls and Susan Polgar World Chess Challenge for Boys.
Plenty of Scholarships (Texas Tech University), Sony Digital Cameras, Chess Prizes and Trophies were awarded (Over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded)! There were some small glitches which caused a few minor delays but we will continue to work hard to make it even better next year.
An agreement has been reached to have these events again for next year as part of the Las Vegas International Chess Festival! We will have a separate event for parents / coaches and their scores can be combined with their children for the LV Festival Family prizes! Scores from the National Open and other side events can be combined as well. The main idea is to make it fun for the whole family!
I would like to thank ALL the parents, coaches, players, volunteers, sponsors, supporters and TDs for supporting this event. We aim to make it bigger and better each year! Special thanks to Fred G., Al L., Bill S., Dr. Karlsson, Dewain B., Glenn P., Betsy D., Victor F. and all the TDs and backroom staff!
Susan, you ran a great event. My children and I will be back next year for sure. It’s nice to see you at the event talking and greeting the parents and players. You’re very different than other professional players. Thank you for all that you do.

The amount awarded is in terms of a tuition rebate. For students that qualify for in-state tuition (Texas and bording parts of Oklahoma and New Mexico) this amount is subtracted from the tuition. So in this case the value is exactly as stated. However, in case of non-residents the value is higher because the scholarship qualifies the student for in-state tuition. Currently, the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition is $7,742 for the academic year. Hence the value to out-of-state students is: $7,742 + $1,000 or $8,742 per academic year. Each scholarship is given for four years so the the total value is therefore up to $34,968. Since all of the three recepients are out-of-state the potential total value of these awards is: 3 x $34,968 = $104,904. On top of these scholarship we anticipate that regular academic scholarships will be awarded.
Sincerely,
