ORLANDO Husbands did his country, his school (The Lodge School) and himself proud when he captured gold in the recently concluded Caribbean and Central American Youth Chess Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Husbands bounced back from a round 6 loss to capture gold by winning his final game against Puerto Rico’s Luis Sosa Pacheco.

Bryan Prescod also finished strongly, defeating Puerto Rico’s Alejandro Flores to capture bronze.

Allon Richards had to settled for 4th place despite a strong showing in the latter rounds, which included handing Husbands his only loss for the tournament and an impressive final round victory over Trinidad’s Alex Walcott.

In the under-16 section, Kemp Lynch of the Garrison School, the current National under 20 Champion, narrowly missed out on the medals when he was held to a draw in the final round by Orlando González of Puerto Rico.

Yu Tien Poon suffered a set back when he lost to Trinidad’s Joshua Johnson in round 5, but he bounced back in round 6 to defeat Puerto Rico’s Christopher Quintana; and, in round 7, he won against Sebastián Cortez of Colombia. Poon finished on 5.5 points to gain the bronze medal behind Johnson (silver) and gold medalist Juan Márquez of Venezuela.

The federation’s president Rohan Waithe noted that with this crop of juniors, Chess in Barbados is on a fine path of growth and development. He also mentioned the federation’s intention to get younger juniors (under 10’s and under 8’s) more involved, as well as more female players.

He thanked coaches Terry Farley, Dirk Austin and Dr. David Jordan for their outstanding work in preparing the team.
