NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte was the biggest casualty on the opening day of the second Subic International Open chess tournament after most Indians started their campaigns with expected victories at Subic, Olongapo City, in the Philippines on Monday.
Kunte, seeded 12, surrendered with black pieces to China’s Yu Lie to be the strongest of the 17 Grandmasters to lose in the 74-player field.
The newly crowned Asian champion and top seed Surya Shekhar Ganguly, third seed Parimarjan Negi, fourth seed Abhijeet Gupta and sixth seed Sandipan Chanda were among the first-round winners.
