Azerbaijani grandmaster Shahriyar Mammadyarov is out of the World Cup after losing 1.5:0.5 in the quarter-final to Ukrainian Sergej Karyakin.

“I am really upset: I felt from the start that I could win the tournament,” Shahriyar told the World Cup official website.

“Perhaps, I was put off by the triumphant spirit of the last round when after victory in the first game I agreed to a draw in the second.

Everything was rebelling inside me: how could I hold a draw with white? But the draw got me through to the quarter-final and there was no reason to refuse it.”

Russian Vladimir Malakhov is also through to the semi-finals, along with Karjakin .

Azerbaijani grandmaster Vugar Hashimov has twice drawn with Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomarev. They will play a deciding tie break today.

The World Cup is being held in Russia’s Khanty-Mansiysk.
