The Icelandic Chess Championship 2014 took part from 23rd May to 1st June, 2014 in the city of Kopavogur, Iceland.

The tournament, organized by the Icelandic Chess Federation and Breidablik Chess Club, was the strongest Icelandic Chess Championship ever, consisting of 6 GMs.

Surprisingly, nobody of the Grandmasters emerged a winner, but the 26-year-old IM Gudmundur Kjartansson, who finished first with 6,5/9 points, leaving the nearest followers a full point behind.

The new Icelandic champion took the gold, a second GM norm and the first prize of 250 000 ISK (nearly 1600 €). Performing 2624, he added 22 ELO points to his rating.

GM Hedinn Steingrimsson and the 12-time-Icelandic-champion GM Hannes Stefánsson shared second place with 5,5/9 points each, but Steingrimsson took the silver on superior tie-break score.

The Candidates Section was won by FM Sigurdur Sigfusson with 7,5/9 points, followed by the best woman in the tournament WGM Lenka Ptacnikova with 7/9 points. Third place was shared in a 3-way tie by FM David Kjartansson, Oliver Johannesson and Vatnar Vignir Stefansson with 6,5/9 points each.
