1. kd4 doesn’t work because of the idea with kh5
1. kd5! a5 2 e4 a4 3 kc4 kg4 4. kb4 kh5 5. kxa4 kg6 6. kb3 kf6 7. ke2 ke5 8. kd3 +-
1 … kxg4 2. e4 (a5 3. kc5! +-) kh5 3 e5 kg6 4. kd6 a5 5. e6
the difference is that white has kd6 if needed and after 1. kd4 there is no such option
