BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A local chess club has done the unthinkable.

The Highland Elementary club raised just under $500 to purchase a giant chess board set.

The teacher that supervises the club said chess helps kids with their math skills and critical thinking skills because with every decision made, like in life, an outcome presents itself.

The outdoor chess set also helps kids remain active, which is a better option than video games, according to the teacher.

There are about 60 kids in the chess club.
