Russian opposition leader and former world chess champion Garry Kasparov has failed in his appeal against his detention during a street protest last weekend.

He was one of dozens arrested in protests in Moscow and St Petersburg that were broken up by riot police.

The US and European powers have expressed concern at police tactics a week out from parliamentary elections.

A court has ruled that Kasparov must remain in custody for five days for organising an illegal protest.
