Nairobi, July 3: Russian grandmaster and former World champion Garry Kasparov will visit Kenya on Saturday to promote chess among the youth.
Kenya Chess Association Chairman Githinji Hinga said the 50-year-old Kasparov will attend the National Youth Chess Championship here, reports Xinhua.
“The former world No.1 will be our guest on Saturday during which he will inspire the youth to play chess, which has also been proved to improve academic performance and decision-making,” Hinga said Tuesday.
Kasparov has declared his intentions to vie for the presidency of chess’ world governing body, FIDE, of which 160 countries are members.
Considered by many to be the greatest chess player of all time, Kasparov became the youngest undisputed World champion in 1985 at the age of 22 by defeating then champion Anatoly Karpov.
His ratings achievements include being continuously ranked World No.1 from 1986 until his retirement in 2005, during which he achieved a peak rating of 2851, the highest score to date.

2851 the highest ever? Did you ever hear of Magnus Carlsen? He beat that.
You added a word that was not there, confusing yourself in the process.
Phrase was …. highest ..to date.
Writer put that accurately.
Kasparov was not all that great as a chess player. He mostly won games by intimidating his opponents on the board. His tricks in this regard are legend, like suddenly leaving the chess table noisily in the middle of the game, banging the door shut, etc to disturb/ derange the opponent. GM Short of UK once used a gorilla simile to describe Kasparov’s behaviour on the chessboard. Compare this to the fair and gentlemanly demeanour of WC Anand and GM Carlsen on the board.
He can declare his intention.. Even I declare my intention to be the president.. who cares.. He will not be chosen.. Between Kasparov and Devil, I will chose devil.. serious man..
Is there anyone in the world who would have a good word about garry.. show me.. ask even the guys who hang around him – nosher, yaz etc.. one word – obnoxious.
