Moscow (dpa) – Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov could face up to five years in jail for violence against a law enforcement officer during a protest against the verdict in Russia‘s Pussy Riot trial, the Interfax news agency reported Saturday, citing a law enforcement source.

Police have accused the former world chess champion of having bitten a police officer on the hand when he was arrested while protesting the guilty verdict and sentencing of three members of the punk band in Moscow on Friday.

Kasparov has denied the allegation.

He had been among about 100 Pussy Riot supporters who were arrested outside the Moscow court. Except for one woman, all have since been released.

Pussy Riot members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Ekaterina Samuzevich were convicted of hooliganism, incitement to religious hatred and sentenced to two years in prison.

They were arrested after a flash mob-style performance in a Moscow cathedral in February, in which they sang “Holy Mother Chase out Putin”.

The case against the women attracted international condemnation, as it was seen as a test of Kremlin tolerance for open dissent.

The court found that intentionally broke the law when they performed a song criticizing relations between President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church in a Moscow cathedral. dpa bvi bve
