Karpov was FIDE World Champion a multitude of times. I love Karpov and everyone in FIDE, too. We should acknowledge the achievements they all have done and award them accordingly.
The last post.
yes Karpov was a great champ.
who was he playing?
Karpov shouldn’t be relegated to “FIDE World Champ”. During his reign Karpov was without question the strongest player of his era, and even beyond that, his concept of the game went beyond his contemporaries by a wide margin. No wonder Kasparov recently said that Karpov was his “best chess teacher”.
Karpov belongs in a list with the top champions of all time, which also includes Kasparov, Fischer, Capablanca, Alekhine, and several others who dominated their eras.
