The impressive World Cup run from Magnus Carlsen has come to a complete halt. He has met his match, someone who is around twice his age. Experience prevails in this match.
Congratulations to both Kamsky and Carlsen. In spite of the loss, Carlsen is in the next World Championship cycle for making it to the semifinal. Watch out!
When Gata decided to make a comeback, he told me his plan and he also gave me a time frame for him to accomplish this goal. He is on pace for it. Good luck Gata! You can do it!

the comeback kid! i hope he becomes world champion for the sake of US Chess, and because i am a big kamsky fan. his games are a joy to watch.
The rating difference decided the match 🙂
Looks like his plan is coming into fruition.
Shirov will stop Kamsky.
Kamsky has won 6 matches in the world cup and is halfway through! Kamsky still has to jump through the following hoops to become world champion:
1) defeat winner of karjakin-shirov in a 4-game match. 2) defeat topalov in an 8-game match.
3) defeat the loser of kramnik-anand, whom FIDE suddenly seeds into the WC cycle, in a 16-game match.
4) defeat the winner of kramnik-anand in a 32-game match. 5) defeat topalov again, whom FIDE has reseeded in the WC cycle after the bulgarian delegation complains about the cheating allegations against kamsky being ignored by FIDE.
A very difficult road ahead, needless to say.
LOL@awfulhangover!! :)))
No matter what…GM Kamsky has really shown in this tournament that he is a super-GM. Congrats to Carlsen. he did a fine job.
I think Kamsky will win this tournament. If he does, then I think he is certainly capable of becoming the WCC. Congrats to him for this win over Carlsen.
And, it would be nice to have an Amerian WCC that isn’t an insane nutcase like Fischer…
GM Kamsky…we know you will win!!!
If Americans want a World Champion, why don’t they just grant citizenship to both Kramnik and Anand.
Guys (I mean the Americans here), don’t you see that you have became overly nationalistic? You root for somebody just because he’s an American despite the fact that this has so little to do with his actual chess play? You root for the sake of rooting for our guy a pretty pathetic position imo. Still, I have that either Kamsky or Shirov wins this tournament because they will create a serious challenge for Topalov, thus interesting games.
The Kiddie Show is Over
Congratulations, Gata!! It may be nationalistic for Americans to root for you, but so be it. It feels good to have you winning. Keep up your preparation and self-confidence!!
Ummmmm, I don’t know what planet you’re from Mr. “Anon” 11:21am…but it’s not being too “nationalistic” to root for GM Kamsky. You say that just because he is an American it has little to do with his chess play???
I don’t care if he’s from Mars…his chess performance speaks for itself and that’s just the way it is. Europe might hate America because many of the top GM’s flood our borders and become Americans…but if you don’t like that….that is your personal issue and has nothing to do with chess.
He’s an American. He is winning. And, it’s not that he is an America that is important…it is that he is winning as compared to the Kamsky of five years ago.
Europeans are just jealous that your GM’s want to come to the US for a better life. Live with the fact that the US is the greatest nation in the history of human civilization…
And live with the fact that Kamsky is American, is winning, and does NOT have a European flag (from any European nation) under his name at ANY tournament…
seems to me that it is HE whom is proud to be an American.
Excellent showing by Gata! It seems he’s gotten past his opening repertoire problems.
And yes, I’m rooting for him both as an excellent chess player and as an American.
Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKSGata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS Gata Kamsky ROCKS
Mhhhh… Is there a correlation between chauvinism and chess skills?
I don’t understand the statement Carlsen is in the next cycle because he made the semifinal. Can you explain the next cycle ?
:-)))))
“Live with the fact that the US is the greatest nation in the history of human civilization…”
This sort of mindset is really scary.
OK, it’s great, but is this really necessary?
Never mind whatever criteria’s used to make such a wonderful claim (surely even american historians have something to say about that…we’ve all benefitted from great advances from…Egypt, Greece, Persia, China, European nation states, south americans maya/aztec/inca, Timbuctu, etc, etc, etc….and those yet to emerge as present civilizations wane – as they all do in time even the greatest).
Anyhow, on a purely chess-based, non-nationalistic note, good luck to Kamsky and the winner of the other – possibly Shirov (playing now for Spain, another of many nations contributing/having contributed to civilization).
🙂
To “Anon” 1:41pm.
Then I guess you are “afraid” of President Lincoln’s words as he stood on the battlefield At Gettysburgh and stated, in plain English, for the world and all future generations to know, that America was:
“The last best hope for the Earth.”
I don’t expect Europeans, or non-Americans to truly grasp the significance of these words because they grew up in a different culture with a different world view and mentality.
And, but the Founders…especially James Madison, Jefferson, and John Adams, did not look upon ancient Egypt for a precedent when considering what type of constitution to adopt in 1787.
The founders would all say the nations you mentioned were “great” but they were “great” in a different sense. Their contributions to world civilization cannot ever be doubted. Yet, the founders of our nation were more concerned with historical examples of representative institiutions…The roman republic, Hobbesian political philosopy, and Locke. So, though you are quite correct in sayin those civilizations had a great and lasting contribution to the world, it is incorrect to say that the founding fathers used any of them as an example to either argue for independence against British parliamentary tyranny, or for creating and successfully implementing our current constitution.
So, to say such a mind set is “scary” isn’t logical. But, as President John Adams said, “Facts are the most stubborn things.”
And the fact is that the United States on this day, December 10, 2007 is the most powerful nation in the history of civilization. It is whether you like it or agree with it or not.
And yes, I’m proud to be an American…because (how does the Lee Greenwood song go?) at least I know I’m free…and I won’t forget the men who died that gave this right to me…”
But, unfortunately, past presidents had to fight Europe’s wars because France in WWII pulled their pants down and let the Germans slide right in.
Say what you will about the United States. It will not change the fact that we are the most free nation, the most powerful nation, and the only nation in the world today that will confront the evil of terrorism.
Search your heart…do you really want the U.S. to stop all support against the war on terror and let the silly EU deal with it????
People everywhere know that America is the greatest. Sure, someday (just like the Roman Empire) we’ll evolve into something else. But for now, on this day, the world is much better having us fighting terrorism than the silly EU that wants to “negotiate” into oblivian.
Like us. Hate us. Remain neutral. I don’t care. What you think, what I think, or anyone else…will not change the fact that our flag will never fall….
And now we are making headway into the chess super elite.
How grand.
Morphy would be proud.
…and before anyone mentions Iraq or Afghanistan…the U.S. could stop it all right now..end the terrorism there. How? Simple. Tactical nuclear weapons. We could make a parking lot out of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and the only reason we are in the mess we are in is that the politicians here (both Democrats and Republicans) are more worried about votes than winning the war in Iraq.
We have the power to stop all the mess in Iraq, that idiot “president” of Iran, Syria, and put a stop to Islamic extremism if only we had someone in charge with the bravery of a General MacArthur….you cluster bomb enough terrorists and nations that support and harbor them…and they WILL surrender, unconditionally, as the Japanese did in WWII.
We are in no quagmire. We just have politicians on boths sides that aren’t concerned about anything but votes.
So, yes…the Iraq “war” could end tomorrow if we used tactical nuclear weaapons to humble terrorist nations such as Iran and Syria…the very nations that are funding the insurgency in Iraq.
But, our politicians will not. And, it will only hurt future generations. I only hope that future generations of Americans will have leaders with the courage to never hesitate to use the power we have and make, as President Woodrow Wilson said, “the world safe for democracy.”
The EU can’t defend themself. No wonder Britain will never join. At least they remember who saved them in WWII. And, I must say the French have now a President that publicly stands before the United States Congress and admits of the sacrifices our soldiers did FOR THEM, especially on June 6, 1944…D-Day.
And history will forever say that the U.S. was right…the allies were right…and the world is a better place because America exists.
What will we be in a thousand years? Like history proves, empires rise and fall. I’m sure the U.S. will evolve into something much different.
No matter what…life goes on. And so does chess…
So Go KAMSKY!!!!
Typical american drivel. I’ve seen them all. Guys who can’t get into America hate Americans – once they get in they become agressively jingoistic ! As for Kamsky, just say that he is a good player and leave it at that. After all he did not hone his chess skills in America. At any rate Kamsky will not get past either Karjakin or Shirov. Also in a proper matchup,he is no match to either Kramnik or Anand.
to anon 2.58
So you want to nuke the rest of the world? Go Ahead. Who cares anymore.
As for Kamsky sure he is GOING….OUT
“…and before anyone mentions Iraq or Afghanistan…the U.S. could stop it all right now..end the terrorism there. How? Simple. Tactical nuclear weapons. We could make a parking lot out of Iraq, Iran, Syria…”
No point arguing with the above “logic”, is there?
Such comments make me ashamed to be an american, and just prove what a bunch of degenerates we can sometimes be. Yes, lets anihilate millions of innocent men, women and children to stop a few terrorists who pose a minimal danger to our security and freedom. That mindset IS scary.
Greatest nation ever? what a joke.
But hey, go Kamsky…
It’s sad that comments start to degenerate into nonsense unrelated to what we’re commenting on. Many of us are “imported” whether because we chose to live in the U.S. to pursue our dreams or to escape persecution.
The U.S. is not perfect, but only history will reveal the true legacy of the U.S. Nevertheless, most of us, even the biggest critics of the U.S., enshroud ourselves with the freedom and resources that being a member of this society provides — not the least of which is the freedom to criticize our own country and politicians to our heart’s content without fear of retribution. (Now, if we would only get caught up with the rest of the industrialized world in facilitating health care to our citizens.)
In any case, it’s great that he’s American and it is only natural that Americans root for him with more fervor because of it. After all, doesn’t everybody root for a sibling over and above others. Family is family. As an American, he’s more closely-related to Americans than the other competitors. It does not matter whether others find it irrational or overly nationalistic. That is our prerogative. That doesn’t mean we don’t admire the other participants. Although Shirov is also my nostalgic favorite, I still hope Gata makes it through.
“a few terrorists who pose a minimal danger to our security and freedom. That mindset IS scary…”
When you can say you have buried your wife and child who just happend to be at work on 9/11…then AND ONLY THEN can you dare even utter the words “minimal danger.”
You are a pathetic “American”. Go vote for the idot Democrats and let them bring this nation to ruin. WHen you lose a loved one…or, might I say, TWO…I think you would have a different mentality. If you are ashamed of being American…I guarantee that North Korea will be happy to take you in to their “paradise.”
You are what Thomas Paine (hey…you did go to school..right???) called “a ‘summer soldier.” You enjoy your freedom but dare never to defend it.
Freedom is not “free” as the old adage goes. I was in the military. Were you? You see the carnage the murdering Islamic terrorists have caused and you dare speak of America in a negative tone.
Hey, you’re welcome to leave. It’s panzies like you keep this nation from truly protecting itself. Go live somewhere else. Iran would like you…Syria…yes, they would, too.
You don’t deserve the freedom the soldiers have died to give you as you talk of us like the U.S. is the “emeny” and are murderers.
If you think for a moment that your Islamic friends love you so much…go there…pick a nation in the middle east…and see how popular you are.
Ever hear of Daniel Pearl??? What did he do? Those barbaric savages beheaded him…and you dare defend them…
and scoff at the U.S.
You are no more “American” than they are.
Typical bleeding heart Liberal Democrat.
Chill, man, you’re gonna have a heart attack. And by the way, heart disease kills as many americans as 9/11 EVERY SINGLE DAY. So lets put things in perspective instead of frothing at the mouth and ranting about the threat of terrorism. It is real, but it is also vastly exagerated by some for political gain.
well said brother. smart bombs are “nice” as well as a curse we all know collateral damage wins wars, but we have to be PC well phooey on that. by the why who invented the smart bomb? oh thats right the evil usa all usa haters should be thanking us for saving your miserible liberial butts or you would all be speaking german, and doing the goose step.
By the way, whether you like it or not, the WWII was won, equally due to USA and USSR. This IS a fact. And I cannot hear people cheering Stalin for saving us 🙂
The nuclear bomb was pretty much useless (particularly the second one, since they would surrender from one day to the other). The war was already practically won.
Everyone with the slightest hint of intelligence knows that the second bomb was the starting act of the cold war rather than the final act of WWII.
By the way, the Americans that have died in Iraq (let alone the Iraqi civilians), are more than the Americans that died in 9/11. To put things in perspective and understand who is the real danger. But then in 9/11 it was rich people that died not some probably black poor soldiers.
Also, it has been proven that there was absolutely no conection of Sadam with terrorism. Yes he was dictator, but no he had nothing to do with Bin Laden… Now with the chaos caused by the war, there are terrorist groups in Iraq. Another proof of who’s action create suffering and reduce security.
GATA KAMSKY rules!!!!!
“The nuclear bomb was pretty much useless (particularly the second one, since they would surrender from one day to the other). The war was already practically won.”
You are so misinformed of the history of the Pacific war in WWII. In reality, even after the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, there were several high ranking Japanese generals that wanted to stop…even kidnap, the Emporer, in order to stop him from delivering his “surrender speech.”
So, it’s completely untrue (just check the primary sources….look for yourself) that the Japanese were ready to “surrender” after Hiroshima.
The U.S. and the Allies were preparing for, and expecting to have to begin a land invasion which would have made D-Day look like a cake walk. Many more allied soldiers would have died if they’d have invaded Japan…far more than the one’s that died from the A-bomb. It’s a sad reality…one that President Truman had to make but by using the A-bomb, it actually and most likely saved more lives than it took.
The entire mess should’ve neverh happened. It’s a sad thing that such an event even occurred. But, the U.S. was dealing with an enemy that would never surrender….had “Kamikaze” pilots (remind you of today’s homicide bombers….terrorists)…it was a necessary choice and all of the allies agreed that a ground invasion of Japan to stop them would have cost many more lives than both A-bombs dropped on Japan.
Japan invaded Manchuria in 1933, killed innocent women and children….not with “smart bombs” but with torture and beheadings.
Yes. The A-bomb was probably meant also to show the Soviets that the U.S. had this weapon. but, the overriding concern was quite simple:
The president had to compare the number of allied soldiers that would die if a land invasion of Japan had to occur, compare that with the number of casualties if the A-bomb was used…and it was a logical decision: A land invasion of Japan by the Allies would have led to far more deaths than all the deaths caused by both A-bombs used against Japan.
And history proves that the first boms dropped would not have stopped the Japanese military. This is NOT my opinion, this is from the actual letters, memoirs and journals of the Japanese that lived through it.
So, you are totally wrong.
Stalin murdered at least 20 million of his own people. For those that know what the “great starvation” was in Kiev, Ukraine (ordered by Stalin) in the early 1930’s you will see that there is no reason to cheer Stalin, who murdered far more than Hitler, and that is such a sad historical fact…so sad…that it’s absured to claim that the USSR “equally” helped end the European war.
The Soviets never participated in the allied invasion of France (D-day) and the only reason the USSR “helped” defeat the German army was twofold: 1) Hitler was an idiot when it came to military matters. He wouldn’t listen to his best generals. and..
2.) Hitler never learned from history (example: Napoleon)…you don’t invade Russia during the winter!!! The Russian winter did more to paralyze the German army than the Soviet army did to stop them. So, yes, the Soviets helped win the war because Hitler was stupid and invaded them and never considered the possibility of how to fight the Soviets during the winter.
The Soviets never liberated France. They came in after raping Poland, along with the German army.
It’s common in eastern european history texts to downplay the role of the U.S.A. and it’s all due to the communist era. The Soviet army did not save Europe in WWII. It was the U.S.A. and her allies. And that is just the way it is.
Roosevelt and Churchill stopped Hitler…Pres. Truman stopped the Japanese. And Lincoln was right by saying that the USA is, even today, “the last best hope for the Earth.”
But, hey…you’re ignorant in history….and I’m a complete idiot when it comes to mathematics like calculus. So, don’t feel bad for being ignorant of history. Just read….it’s all there in the letters, journals, and documents preserved from that era. Don’t take the word of historians…just read the primary sources…they tell the truth.
But, at least now there is a French president that actually thanks the U.S. for her sacrifice in WWII to save France.
It amazes me how ignorant people are of history.
Susan, may I kindly request to delete this pointless conversation.
To “anonymous” December 10 12:43 PM / 2:40 PM / 2:48 PM / 4:07 PM / December 11 4:30 AM / 4:46 AM :
I am European, and I totally agree with you.
America is the greatest nation on Earth, and is protecting the Free World against the islamic terrorists like it did protect the Free World against the nazis during WWII and against the communists during the Cold War.
Europeans indeed shouldn’t forget that freedom is not free.
Just to note: My wife is from Eastern Europe. I am an American and spent many years in eastern europe. I really love the people of Eastern Europe.
However, the U.S. flag stands for freedom, and you can mock it if you wish….that is fine. You can say the sky is green..but it doesn’t change the fact that it is really blue.
I’ve lived in Russia, Slovakia, the Czech Repulic , Germany, and Italy.
They are all becoming more and more Americanized. Some hate it. The ones that want to earn a living embrace it.
Hate us if you will. We saved you. That is history and there isn’t a troll on this blog that can change this fact.
Let’s go back to chess…
The “EU”…how pathetic! No wonder Britain never joined. OH…but wait…the Brits are Europeans…and they don’t like the EU…
Funny….
They know who saved them.
The USA
and there isn’t a word that can be written or spoken that will change this historical fact.
Live with it.
“I’ll allow it!”

So why did the chicken cross the road?
To cheer Kamsky to victory…
and to get away from Slaoni, Goichi, Roberti, Motti, and the preserved colon of Joseph Stalin.
So why did the chicken cross the road?
–To get to the USA…the road was probably right on the border.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To steal our valuable American jobs!
Americans are constanly fighting eacher other to climb the corporate lettuce picking ladder….
Damn chickens.
