Kamsky Bio by FIDE

Gata Kamsky (USA)

He was born in the Soviet Union, but at the age of 15 he moved to the USA with his family. He won the junior Championship twice in the Soviet Union and in 1990 he became the youngest player among the top ten players in the world. In 1991 he became a grandmaster and won the US Championship.

While achieving successes in many tournaments (Las Palmas 1994, Dos Hermanas 1995) and advancing to the final of the PCA candidate matches in 1995, Kamsky as a World Championship candidate challenged the current World Chess Champion, Anatoly Karpov. However, when he lost his match against Karpov, he decided to go on with his studies at the Faculty of Law at Brooklyn College and stopped playing at chess tournaments. After graduating from college, he participated in the FIDE Knockout World Championship in 1999.

His return to the world of chess was successful as he proved in several tournaments and as a participant in the USA team when they won the bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad. On the 2005 April Fide rating list he was 19th with 2700 elo points. Since that time his rating has risen further.

Last year, he won the World Cup by defeating Alexei Shirov in the final. As a result of this, he has the right to play a challenger match with former World Champion Veselin Topalov for the right to play in a World Chess Championship match in 2009.

His playing style is balanced and characterized by accurate calculation and excellent endgame technique.
