Grandmasters contest President’s Cup in Baku

The President’s Cup in memory of Azerbaijan’s late president Heydar Aliyev has begun at the Park Inn Hotel in Baku.
The cup will have two sections – rapid chess and blitz.
The first contest starts today and involves eight grandmasters – four Azerbaijani and four foreign. They are Shahriyar Mammadyarov, Teymur Rajabov, Rauf Mammadov and Gadir Huseynov of Azerbaijani, Vladimir Kramnik (Russia), Gata Kamsky (USA), Judit Polgar (Hungary) and Emil Sutovsky (Israel).
The rapid chess part of the contest will end on 1 May after seven rounds. The blitz contest, involving 14 chess players, will be held on 2 May. The players will play simultaneous games on 87 boards on 3 May.
