The Los Angeles Chess Club conducted the Big Bang Open last weekend. Grandmaster Melikset Khachiyan won the 32-player tournament of one-hour games with a score of 5 1/2 – 1/2 . Joel Banawa, who drew Khachiyan, finished second at 5-1.

Tatev Abrahamyan and best experts Robert Akopian and Roger Norman had 4 1/2 -1 1/2 . Dennis Neymit led the under-1800 section.

The brilliancy prize in the recent U.S. Amateur Team West has been awarded to IM Andranik Matikoyzan for his victory over Derek Tan. The game appeared in the March 1 chess column.

The five-round Santa Monica Bay Chess Club Championship begins at 7 p.m. Monday in St. Andrew’s Church, 11555 National Blvd., Los Angeles.

Vartan Ghazarian, Mark Sokolovsky and Marc Conde led their sections in the Exposition Park Chess Club’s March tournament. The next is scheduled April 5. The club meets for casual play at 1 p.m. every Sunday in the public library, 3900 S. Western Ave., Los Angeles.
