Indonesian wins Asian chess tournament

Indonesian chess player Irene Kharisma Sukandar finished in first place at this year’s Asian Continental Chess Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, beating out Indian player Eesha Karavade, on Sunday.

Kompas.com reported that nobody expected Irene to win the contest, which was held between May 5-13, especially considering that Indonesia’s best male chess player, Susanto Megaranto, failed to even make it into the top five.

Irene had earlier said on Saturday that she would participate in the Women’s World Chess Championship if she won this tournament. (png)
