India in sole lead in Doha Chess

Doha, Dec 9: Indian men put up an impressive performance to take the sole lead for the country despite World No. 2 Koneru Humpy’s shock defeat in the third round of the mixed team event in chess at the 15th Asian Games here.

Humpy, who clinched the first gold for the country in the Games in individual women’s competition, went down to Zhu Chen — a China-born Qatari player.

However, the Indian men pulled their weight to beat hosts Qatar 2-1. That carried India to sole lead with 7.5 points in their kitty.

Krishnan Sasikiran put it past Mohammed Al Medaikhi while Pentyala Harikrishna beat Mohammed Ali Sayed of the home team.

Vietnam are at the second place on 7 points. With 6.5 points each, China, Indonesia and Qatar are at the third place followed by Uzbekistan on six points.

Vietnam handed Uzbekistan a 2-1 defeat while China beat Iran 2.5-0.5. Indonesia blanked Bangladesh 3-0 to move into shared third place. There will be nine rounds and India are now hot favourites for the gold.
