LONDON – British authorities said Friday that a toxic radioactive substance had been found in the body of a former KGB agent turned Kremlin critic who blamed a “barbaric and ruthless” Russian President Vladimir Putin for having him poisoned.

As Canadian security agencies arrested an elite Russian spy this month, President Vladimir Putin landed by helicopter atop the new $400-million headquarters for one of his country’s intelligence agencies. Halfway around the world in Montreal’s Trudeau Airport, authorities were keeping a lookout for an ostensible Canadian citizen by the name of Paul William Hampel. He had been flagged as an “illegal” and a serious threat to national security. Similar scenes have played out in many cities of late. In Prague this September, authorities kicked out an alleged Russian spy for trying to steal NATO and European Union secrets. A year earlier, in Japan, another alleged Russian spy — posing as an Italian consultant — was arrested for trying to steal semi-conductors that could be used in military guidance systems. Not long before that, an Irish businessman was arrested at Los Angeles airport, the FBI accusing him of touring Silicon Valley to buy electronic eavesdropping equipment for Russia. The fading power, now led by former KGB agents like Mr. Putin, is increasingly sending its eyes and ears abroad to try to close its 20-year technology gap in Western technologies and military systems. The Cold War may be long gone, but elements live on. It has been estimated there could be as many as 100 Russian spies in the United States, another 40 in Britain. In Canada, CSIS will say only that it is trying to keep its eyes on 150 foreign spies in total.
Stalin used to order up awards for himself and his cronies, too.
The same people who root for Kramnik.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov – Criminal of the year…
Vladimir Putin – Azazello of the Year…
Both work closely with journalists
Putin,eh?
Hmm,according to some brilliant minds O.J.Simpson should be also declared as person of the year!
Since when murderers has been included on the list of achievements of the year?

The thing, which I was the most afraid of, was the doping test.
It was sent to a lab in Moscow, which was said to have been licensed by the IOC, but I did not believe that. They could have said at any time that Topalov’s test was positive;
Strangely enough, just before the beginning of the tiebreak the referee said there would be a second doping test after the end of the match.
}
This IS a legitimate concern by Danailov. Topalov & Danailov should not trust that lab.
How ironic that the illogical doping tests increase the chance of cheating, rather than decrease it as advertised.
The possible forms of cheating are not limited to actions by the two players.

Kramnik will come in the history books as the first person in the world who uses a toilet equipped with internet (UTP-8) cable.
Ilyumzhinov, Putin, and Kramnik – the unholy trinity that introduced the KGB methods of lies and intimidation in chess.
