2008: Renaissance Year in Hungary

Budapest, December 4 (MTI) – Culture Minister Istvan Hiller greeted a number of well-known Hungarians on Tuesday who – on his invitation – have agreed to serve on a board of patrons overseeing the programmes of Hungary’s Renaissance Year, starting on January 22, 2008.

Renaissance Year is being organised to mark the 550th anniversary of the ascendance of King Matthias – the Renaissance king – to the Hungarian throne in 1457.

“This anniversary is an opportunity to look back on a Hungary that was economically, socially and culturally prosperous, and to point out the importance of the spirit of the Renaissance in modern times, ” Hiller said at the founding session of the body.

Members of the new board are criminologist Katalin Gonczol, sociologist Elemer Hankiss, economist and National Bank Deputy President Julia Kiraly, historian Maria Ormos, author Lajos Parti Nagy, Chess International Grandmaster Judit Polgar, Paralympic champion sabre and foil fencer Pal Szekeres and Benedictine Abbot of Pannonhalma Asztrik Varszegi.
