The 43rd 2006 National ‘A’ Indian Men’s Chess Championship is being held in coastal city of Visakhapatnam, India from April 3rd to 17th, 2006. The tournament is a category eight, with an average rating of 2442. GMs Ganguly, Sandipan, Kunte, Ramesh and many titled player are participating. After five rounds, Humpy, the only female in the “Men’s” section, is leading with a perfect 5.0/5.0 score. Her nearest rivals are trailing her by 1.5 points.
Humpy has just turned 19 and is the second-highest active female player (after Judit Polgar) in the latest FIDE rating list. She is also the 5th ranked overall player in India. As I predicted before, she has a very bright future ahead of her.
She is quiet, humble, mature and has strong work ethics, similar to the tradition of the Polgar sisters when we were younger, and unlike some of the other young female players today who are more into personal ego and fame. I wish Humpy the best and I expect her to be a Women’s World Champion in the near future.
Hello Ms. Polgar
Congratulations for your great job. And, btw, are you planning to play again in competitions one of these days?
As for your comments about the “ego trips”: Several times you have mentioned this kind of ego-driven players. Everytime you did it in a not so positive way. I ask:
1. Who are you talking about? Of course you have someone in mind when you say those things. I’ve seen here in this blog polemics about this issue, always with the name of Kosteniuk involved. Though you always denied you were talking about her, the truth is, the doubt is there. Simply because you play this hit-and-run game. That is called cowardice. Besides: if you are so angry about this kind of players, if you think their negative to the game, just say who the hell you are talking about!! Is that so hard?
2. Why are you so annoyed by these “ego-driven” players? Are they so harmful to chess? Are they that bad players? Why are you so obssessed with them you talk about them whenever you can??
For once and for all, I would like to have answers to may questions. Really answers, not evasive sentences that do nothing else than save you from assuming the disguised judjements and accusations you usually do.
Best regards,
Sonia Fernandes
Sonia,
Why do you bring up Kosteniuk’s name? I didn’t. I could not care less what she does. I talked about the problems I see in general.
There are many young female players who care more about their looks, fame and personal ego than playing good chess.
I have the right to believe in promoting chess with dignity and integrity. Others have the right to do what they wish.
Many people asked why women cannot play chess as well as men. This is one of the reasons. Some young female players pay more attention about their makeups than studying chess and it shows.
It is not a coincidence that my sister Judit and I occupied the #1 and #2 ranking in the world for more than 21 years.
I met many of these young players. I see the difference between Humpy and others. That is why she is where she is today. There is no miracle pill.
Best wishes,

I agree with Susan. I dont think she is personally attacking anyone; she is just highlighting the difference between being driven by shallow things, and having a character like Koneru Humpy’s. It is obvious that the later is more desirable, and it shows in her performance.
I agree. Susan didn’t insult anyone here. The problem is the ego of people like Kosteniuk is fragile. They think everyone is talking about them. Gimme a break.

Susan is praising Humpy for her good work ethics. Other young players should listen to this valuable advice. Even some fans have big ego. lol
Is it true that this championship is 21 rounds long ? This is insane.
Amazing 21 round tournament! It’s insane!
I think Sonia is really Diego 🙂 He’s upset that some people don’t like trash promotion.
Did you guys even hear the news? His wife will be featured in the May issue of Penthouse. How disgusting!
Vladimir
Susan didnt you play Humpy Koneru to a draw? And what do you think her chances are of becoming female Champion in the near future?
thanks TFK
I think her chances to become a women’s world champion is extremely high if she continues the same trend.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

Ms. Polgar,
The positive things you have to say about Humpy Koneru unfortunately seem to take a back seat to the negative comments you make about other anonymous players. If something is good it will stand on its own without such comparisons. The impression I’m left with is that a player you admire is merely being used to denigrate one or more players you don’t. I can’t tell you what to do any more than you can tell those other players what to do, but I have more respect for people in your position who praise those they feel deserve praise, and let the others’ places in history fall where they may. Not everyone is, should be, or can be the Polgar sisters.
Naaa! She’s a model, not a chessplayer!
Susan,
anonymous does make two good points:
1) Perhaps good sociology and group discussion/communication studies are in order
2) why do you post pictures of models/actresses?
