GRAND master David Howell took the £1,000 prize in Bournemouth’s biggest and most prestigious chess competition.

The 21-year-old from Sussex, who was Britain’s youngest ever grand master aged 16, managed to win all of his five games.

In the final round he beat Serbian FIDE Master Jovica Radovanovic, the only other player with a perfect record, who lost on time.

The competition was held over the weekend at Boscombe’s Carrington House Hotel on Knyveton Road and attracted 150 players.

Rising superstar Peter Williams, 16, from Alton in Hampshire, managed an impressive four wins and one draw out of five in the top category.

The organisers hope the Bournemouth Grand Chess Congress will one day become the country’s biggest weekend congress.
